Margaret Atwood: A Famous Canuck
A Day in the Life of Atwood:
Margaret Atwood was born on November 18 1939 in Canada. Her father Carl was a zoologist and his work caused his family to move around frequently. Because she moved around, Margaret was unable to go to school full-time until eighth grade. However, Margaret Atwood still had time to pursue her love of reading and in high school; she was involved in the school newspaper.
In 1957, after graduating from college, she attended Victoria College and gained a bachelor’s in English. During this time period, she wrote her first work- a privately printed book of poems known as "Double Persephone." After winning an award on this book, she continued her education at Harvard- obtaining a master's degree. In 1963, she worked at a marketing research firm and this experience later influenced her literature. Other than being an author and a marketing agent, she was also teaching at various universities, such as the University of Virginia and the University of British Columbia for 20 years.
At Harvard, she met Jim Polk, whom she married at the age of 27, but they divorced shortly afterward. Soon she re-married to American author Grame Gibson and raised a daughter, Eleanor. Currently, she is working on promoting her latest masterpiece MaddAddam.
